Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Ensuring your employees are safe

Portable Appliance Testing (more commonly referred to as PAT testing) ensures that electrical appliances are safe for you and your employees to use.

Is PAT Testing a legal requirement?

While there is no law that directly requires PAT Testing to be specifically undertaken, the Electricity At Work Regulations 1989 require that the Duty Holder (the employer) is required to ensure that all electrical equipment is safe to use. Some insurers also require that testing of electrical equipment is completed regularly.

How can this duty be met?

Regular testing of electrical equipment by competent persons helps you to meet this legal duty. Failure to do so could put you, your employees and visitors at risk from dangerous electrical equipment.

What does it involve

Our technicians, all of whom hold City & Guilds Certificates, will inspect all portable electrical appliances in line with the current Code of Practice. This involves a visual inspection of the item prior to testing and then a full test specific to the type of item. For microwaves, an additional emissions test is undertaken to ensure that there is no microwave leakage from the device which could be dangerous to operators.
